How to pick which Creator to Work with
Insert Presentation here.
This is an easy article to write in theory. In a perfect world, you just work for your own favorite creator. However, especially since this space is so new, it’s important to get on a rocketship, not a boat. The following are questions to ask yourself before you decide who to work with early:
1. Does the Creator Have a Clear Vision?
The best creators know where they’re going. They have a clear sense of what they’re trying to build—whether it’s a media empire, a product line, or something else entirely. You don’t want to join someone who’s just reacting to trends or winging it. That kind of chaos might work for a while, but it’s hard to sustain.
Creators with a clear vision make better decisions, attract better opportunities, and create better environments for their teams.
What to Ask:
- Do they have a long-term plan, or are they just chasing views?
- Do they know their audience and what they stand for?
2. Is Their Business Growing?
This is the equivalent of asking whether a startup has product-market fit. A creator’s business isn’t just their follower count—it’s their engagement, revenue streams, and potential to scale.
Look for creators who aren’t dependent on a single platform or revenue source. A strong creator business is diversified: ad revenue, merch, brand deals, maybe even their own products. If they’re already doing this, it’s a good sign they’re thinking like a business and not just an individual.
What to Ask:
- Are they making money from multiple sources?
- Is their audience growing consistently, or have they plateaued?
- Are they building something that could scale with the right team?
3. Do You Align With Their Brand?
When you work for a creator, you’re tying your name to theirs. Their reputation will become part of yours, so make sure you’re comfortable with it.
This isn’t just about avoiding creators with bad reputations (though obviously, do that). It’s about asking whether you believe in what they stand for. Are they authentic? Do they have integrity? Do you respect their work?
What to Ask:
- Do I feel proud of their content and what they represent?
- Would I want to tell people I work for them?
4. Are They Good Leaders?
Working for a creator can be tricky. You’re working for a person, not just a company. Their leadership style will affect everything, from how the team operates to how you feel about your work.
The best creators are good at delegating and respecting their team’s expertise. They understand they can’t do everything themselves. If they micromanage, overwork their team, or lack organizational skills, you’re going to feel it.
What to Ask:
- Do they value their team and give them room to work?
- Are they organized enough to run a growing business?
- Do they listen to feedback?
5. Is the Role a Good Fit for You?
Sometimes people join creators because they’re excited about the brand but end up in roles that don’t fit their skills or interests. Don’t just ask whether the creator is right for you—ask whether the job is.
You’ll do your best work in a role that aligns with your strengths and gives you room to grow.
What to Ask:
- Will I enjoy the work I’ll be doing day-to-day?
- Does this role challenge me in a good way?
- Is there room for me to grow here?
6. Is Their Business Built to Last?
Some creators are like startups with great early traction but no long-term plan. They blow up, make money fast, and then fade away. Others are building businesses that will last—ones that adapt to new platforms, trends, and audience needs.
Look for creators who are investing in their future: diversifying their income, evolving their content, and building a loyal audience that will stick with them no matter what.
What to Ask:
- Are they adapting to changes in the industry?
- Do they reinvest in their business and team?
- Can I see them being successful in five years?
7. Do You See a Path for Yourself?
When you pick a creator to work for, you’re also picking a path for yourself. Think about where this role could take you. Will it teach you valuable skills? Will it open doors to future opportunities? Will you look back and think, “That was worth it”?
The right creator will give you the chance to grow alongside them.
What to Ask:
- Will this role move me closer to my long-term goals?
- Am I excited about what I’ll learn here?
- Can I see myself growing with this creator over time?
